Sat, 1st Nov 2003 Another large celebration was held at Vale do Lobo to celebrate Sander van Gelder's 25 year ownership of this tourist resort. Following a 4-day 'Seniors Tennis Tournament' in which Michael Stich defeated John McEnroe in the final, two Texas Scramble golf competitions were staged over the resort's Ocean and Royal golf courses. At the more difficult Royal course, the team of Jeremy Bates, Neil Durden-Smith, Antonio Sobrinho, Michael Stich and Mats Wilander won with a score of 56.1 strokes net. The victorious team at the Ocean course comprised of Sid Richardson, Veronica King, Peter and Margaret Rumgay with a net score of 53.8. The grand finale of the week was a glittering party which included a laser display, as well as musical entertainment by Dutch singer Rene Froger and the Lou Roman band. |
Vila Sol Sat, 1st Nov 2003 Vila Sol held their 12th 'Anniversary Invitational Tournament', a Texas Scramble event, was followed by a great evening party with an African theme. The winning team with its net score of 55 strokes comprised of Rodrigo and Frederico Fragoso Fernandes, Alexandre Barroso and Ricardo Oliveira. |
Old Course Sat, 1st Nov 2003 The Vilamoura Old Course was the venue for another recent charity tournament in aid of the Portuguese Cancer Prevention League. The field totaled about 100 golfers and 6,500 Euros were raised. In a day of high scoring Luis Uva won the men’s net prize with 43 points whereas Carmen Tomas triumphed in the ladies’ division, scoring 41 points. Antonio Rosado carded the best gross score (40 pts). |
Laguna Sat, 1st Nov 2003 Every August, Vilamoura organizes a free open to all summer golf school for local and foreign youngsters aged from 8 to 18 at the Laguna course. The tuition courses culminate in a series of tournaments on 30th-31st August for each age group and a prize-giving party at 5 p.m. at the Pinhal clubhouse. |
Sat, 1st Nov 2003 Davis Love III collected his fourth victory of the year as he led from start to finish to win the International at Castle Pines, Colorado. Davis moved up 3 positions to No.3 in World Golf Ranking and moved past Tiger Woods to the top of the US PGA Tour Money List with $5,122,038 from 15 events. Vijay Singh and Retief Goosen were the joint runners-up. Vijay Singh moved down one place to World No.4 while Retief Goosen remained at World No.12. US Open Champion Jim Furyk won the Buick Open by two strokes from Tiger Woods, Chris DiMarco, Briny Baird and Geoff Ogilvy. Jim Furyk improved 3 places to a career-high World Ranking position at No.3 and up to No.2 on the PGA Tour money list with $4,401,313 – second to Tiger Woods with $4,810,496. Of the runners up Tiger Woods remained at the top of the World Ranking with 7.87 points clear of World No.2 Ernie Els. Chris DiMarco enjoyed a 3-place jump to No.14. Briny Baird moved into the Top-100 at No.84 while Geoff Ogilvy became the 11th highest-ranked Australasian as he moved to No.101. In the Talma Finnish Challenge on the European Challenge Tour, Australian Marcus Fraser was victorious and moved to No. 346. |
