Fri, 1st Apr 2005 An exciting new 'Amateur International Golf Week' has been scheduled for 27th June to 1st July by ATV – Vilamoura Promotional Bureau and staged at the Vilamoura Old Course, Laguna, Millennium, Pinhal courses. The main event is a 72-hole stroke-play tournament on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday with individual daily prizes and on Wednesday. There is an 18-hole 2-player Team Trophy plus an optional 'Sand Bunker Championship'. |
Fri, 1st Apr 2005 In eastern Algarve landscaping of the first of two courses designed by Jack Nicklaus is in progress. These are part of a large property development near Vila Nova de Cacela called Monte Rei Golf & Country Club, and the first course is due to open in about a year's time. The Oceanico Group which has invested in Holiday Resorts in western Algarve is expected to break ground on their new Amendoeira Golf Resort between Silves and Alcantarilha where two 18-hole courses are planned. Construction of both these are scheduled to begin simultaneously and the expected opening date is May, 2007. |

Vila Sol Fri, 1st Apr 2005 Vila Sol has appointed Peter Lester to be the resident professional at its recently upgraded Golf Academy beside the resort's new 5-star hotel and its 27-hole Donald Steel designed course. Originally from Scunthorpe, Peter turned Pro in 1978 and has worked in several European countries and has taken part in many golf schools and training camps held in the Algarve. The Vila Sol Golf Academy is well equipped and includes swing analysis and recording equipment as well an extensive practice area. Peter Lester has started to develop junior golf for students at local participating schools. |
Alamos Fri, 1st Apr 2005 Golf continues to expand in the Algarve and three new projects have been started. The most advanced is the Alamos course which should be ready toward the end of this year. It will be located alongside the Morgado do Reguengo course but will not have a playing length as long as the latter. |
Fri, 1st Apr 2005 Padraig Harrington began the final round of the Honda Classic in a tie for 21st place but after 13 holes of his final round he had recorded 10 birdies and held a two stroke lead. He eventually returned a 9-under-par 63 for a total of 14 under par which was later equaled by Vijay Singh, who had a final round of 64 with Joe Ogilvie. An up-and-down for par on the second play-off hole secured the title for Padraig Harrington who climbed up to Nº 6 became Europe’s highest ranked player. |

Fri, 1st Apr 2005 Ernie Els - (South Africa) Dubai Desert Classic Emirates - Dubai - United Arab Emirates - 3rd to 6th March, 2005 Ernie Els produced a spectacular eagle on the final hole of the Dubai Desert Classic at the Emirates to overtake Miguel Angel Jimenez and Stephen Dodd to win by a single stroke. Ernie Els remained third in the world but was only about half an average point behind Vijay Singh and about one point behind the new Nº 1 Tiger Woods. |

Ernie Els remained Nº 3 and Henrik Stenson became Nº 80. |
