Golf in Castro Marim

The main origin of the small historic town which dates back some 5.000 years as probably as an island serving the estuary of the River Guadiana. After its capture from the Moors in 1242 stronger battlements were constructed and these were later improved adding a castle by various Portuguese kings as it became an important point of defence of the frontier against Spain. During the 14th century the castle was the headquarters of the Order of Christ which was later replaced by the Knights Templar.

The nearby town of Vila Real de Santo Antonio took over Castro Marim's importance when it was completely rebuilt by the Marques de Pombal after the earthquake of 1755. With the construction of the bridge in 1991 across the River Guadiana it now provides a speedy driving connection with Seville and the rest of Spain. To the south of the town is the popular beach resort Monte Gordo that offers the tourist kilometres of sea washed sandy beach and bathing.

There are three golf courses in the area. The outstanding 18-hole Monte Rei Golf Course, the 27-hole Castro Marim Golf Course and the 18-hole Quinta do Vale Golf Course.

Hidden gem!
What a hidden gem of a course, very near to the Portuguese/Spanish border.
Perhaps not quite as well maintained in places as some of the more expensive courses in the Algarve, but there are so many interesting holes here that it's easy to forgive that. It's a really enjoyable course with some lovely views. Would absolutely recommend a visit here.

Fantastic experience
Our second trip to this fantastic course. The whole experience here is top notch from arrival to leaving and is based around ensuring that everyone enjoys their day here.
Cracking course, that was more challenging this time with the wind getting up, with so many wonderful holes, especially the 13th and 14th and once again, we had the feeling of having the course all to ourselves.
I can't imagine a golfing trip to the Algarve that doesn't include a visit here. Simply stunning.

Superb experience from start to finish. Service was first class and the course was nothing short of sensational. Every hole was interesting and a joy to play. A fantastic experience and worth every penny to play. Can't wait to return.
