Tue, 1st May 2012 Rory McIlroy won the Honda Classic and becomes the second youngest ever World Nº 1. His two stroke victory was ahead of the youngest ever World Nº 1 Tiger Woods, who shot a final round of 62, and 43-year-old American Tom Gillis. The Northern Irish sensation looked assured during the week and handling the tricky conditions on Sunday with aplomb. He showed skill in getting up and down round the back nine with the skill and poise of a player who has already well established himself as one of the greats of the game at such a young age. It is the culmination of an outstanding run of form going back to last September that has seen him finish in the top three on eight of his previous 11 starts. The week also saw a return to form for Tiger Woods who found himself creeping back up the list after his runners up finish. Currently residing at 16th it proved a career best week for American Tom Gillis, who tied for second place with his compatriot. This resulted in a jump of 107 places to 157th. |
Tue, 1st May 2012 Bubba Watson - (USA) Masters Tournament Augusta National - Augusta - Georgia - USA - 5th to 8th April, 2012 Bubba Watson won the Masters Tournament at the second extra hole on a sudden death play-off with Louis Oosthuizen after the pair had tied on a 10-under-par total of 278. Bubba became the 14th different winner of the last 14 Major Championships and the eighth in a row of players who have never won before. Seven was already a record! The win took Bubba Watson up to number 4 in the World Ranking and a career high having spent just one week in the World's Top 10 back in May 2011. Oosthuizen moved back into the Top 20 with an eight place jump to Nº 19th. |
Tue, 1st May 2012 Branden Grace - (South Africa) Volvo China Open Binhai Lake - Tianjin - China - 19th to 22nd April, 2012 Branden Grace became only the second player in European Tour history to win three times in a season after graduating through Qualifying School as he claimed victory at the Volvo China Open. He had already won the Joburg Open and Volvo Golf Champions. Three clear of last year's winner Nicolas Colsaerts overnight, the South African's lead on the final day was never fewer than two shots and a closing 69 saw him finish 21 under at Binhai Lake. Having finished 2011 at number 271 Grace makes a further jump up the World Ranking to 40th. |
