Penina Championship Description

The Penina Championship Golf Course is the grandfather of all courses in the Algarve and a permanent living memory to its architect and active promoter, Sir Henry Cotton. It was originally paddy fields for rice growing that has been converted into a flat challenging course and especially for the stronger player. Something short of half a million shrubs and trees were planted in the conversion. As the fairways are flat Henry Cotton introduced strategically placed water hazards to catch the unwary long hitter.

A once great course but needs some TLC. Played cheaper courses which were in better condition on this trip.

Great layout, although Par threes are a bit too long. Course and surrounds in need of some TLC.

What a let down for a course with a great history it is in a state of disrepair the greens and fairways are ok but the bunkers and tees are no sand and grass. It looks like no one cares. Such a shame for a course with this history .we have played 4 courses this week and they were In great condition so don't blame the weather

Having read some reviews that this was a poor imitation of its previous quality, we found it much better than expected. In generally good condition with excellent greens (quick and true), good fairways and is obviously looked after. Most of the tees were pretty worn, a consequence of the markers being in exactly the same place too often. Parts of the clubhouse looked tired while other parts were very smart in that old-school Iberian way. One minor point is that on arrival the lady at the reception desk thought I was a 1-ball with one buggy - our group was actually 6 players with 3 buggies. Fortunately this didn’t affect our booking but boy was she miserable!
