Penina Championship Description

The Penina Championship Golf Course is the grandfather of all courses in the Algarve and a permanent living memory to its architect and active promoter, Sir Henry Cotton. It was originally paddy fields for rice growing that has been converted into a flat challenging course and especially for the stronger player. Something short of half a million shrubs and trees were planted in the conversion. As the fairways are flat Henry Cotton introduced strategically placed water hazards to catch the unwary long hitter.

I find everything at Penina a little poorly and the course somewhat boring... We've been there a couple of times and now and I don't think we'll be going back any time soon. It's not bad or anything, it's just that there are so many courses that are more beautiful and fun to play ...

A great layout that feels quite tired and in need of some sprucing up and money spent. A real shame as it clearly was a great course in it's heyday.

Greens were good but fairways not in good condition, also played the 9 hole coarse poor condition
