Faldo Description

The 18 hole Nick Faldo Golf Course is located close to the village of Amendoeira and it is impressive to play and has the challenges to be a real talking point in the Algarve. With so many courses in the region this it is no mean feat. In a modern twist of a traditional recipe, cacti and wild herbs replace the role of heather, attractive oaks and ancient olive trees take the place of a lush woodland, and desert scrub bunkers of crushed limestone replace the Berkshire sandy tracts in a golf course that revels in the classic principles of strategic play.

With strategic play in mind, the course asks for careful positioning to score well. Rocky areas, meandering watercourses, good views to the distant mountains of Monchique, orange groves, all of these give the course its own character.

The course first hole is a testing uphill, Par 4, offering a number of risk and reward opportunities. The downhill, Par 5, hole 4, encounters a meandering watercourse, which comes into play on three of the front 9 holes and two of the inward play. The inward 9 holes include several which will become the talking point of the 19th hole cognoscenti. Mastering the massive Par 5 hole 13th which has a descending fairway, which when the wind is behind the player, will demand consistent shot making all the way to the hole. The holes 14 and 15 continue to challenge the golfer, sometimes playing amongst rocky outcrops. After leaving the high ground to the west, the 18th brings the game to a close with a magnificent Par 5.

Definitely worth a visit

A challenging but fair course in good overall condition. Play was slow, over 5 hours and why don’t some golfers rake the bunkers and repair pitch marks. It’s part of the culture of the game. Love Life, Love Golf
Looking tired and in need of investment.

Have been playing this course annually since inception. Sad therefore to see that it seems to be on the decline. No longer meet & greet in the car park. Carry your own clubs down to the buggy park where only 1 member of staff on duty , struggling to cope with the numbers for both courses. Buggies in need of replacement ( torn seats, no complimentary tees, no ice in the ice buckets and most frustrating of all, no GPS on the screens (obviously not paying for this service). Driving range - teeing ground in very poor condition and the balls in despite need of replacement. Cart paths - generally ok but not particularly well cared for (weeds growing through the cobbles) Tees - very difficult to find a flat lie on the tee. Sparse in grass but heavily sanded) Fairways…excellent Greens …excellent and a good pace with ball rolling true. Bunkers….very poor condition and a severe lack of rakes given the size of the bunkers, with some not even having one in them. Buggy bar service…very good Pace of play…least said..but 5hours 20 mins. Starter on 1st tee…..sat in his buggy the whole time, no interaction and basically left to our own devices. Overall, very enjoyable to play but be prepared and as Sid, a big reinvestment is long overdue.

Greens and fairways were immaculate. Bunkers were also good. Tee boxes were terrible and a few scabby areas around the course. You can tell it was an amazing course and complex when it first opened but it’s generally looking quite tired in a lot of places. That aside it’s definitely worth playing but doesn’t match up to the ‘Faldo’ expectations
