Palmares Description

The 27 hole Palmares Golf Course is located near Lagos in the Algarve. This course has been totally transformed by the American course designer Robert Trent Jones Jr. He has created a mixture of parkland with authentic Links style. The 27 holes are laid out on the side of a south-facing hill overlooking the Bay of Lagos. It is questionably the most attractive location of all the golf courses in the Algarve. The views as you play your round are often quite breathtaking.

On the Palmares Course there are three 9 hole circuits the Alvor Course, the Lagos Course, and the Praia Course. The first nine holes run through woodland and the down to the beach with lovely views of the Alvor Estuary and the ocean. The Lagos nine take the player down to the beach and again with superb view. The last nine holes are mainly located on the actual beach among the sand dunes with a par 5 of 550 metres creating a good challenge.

I’d read loads of negative reviews about the condition of Palmares in the summer of 2024 because of the drought they had in the algarve, but a friend played recently and said it was getting back to its best so I booked it. It was the best course we played out of Vale De Lobo and Espiche, mainly due to the superb greens, which were quick and true. You can see a few bits of the course that still need to received slightly after the summer, but the new head green keeper seems to be doing a superb job and the course is back to its best.

First visit and played the inland 18 not the Praia. Well laid out course. Clubhouse terrace is fab after golf with amazing views. Will revisit and play 2 rounds next time

Played on final day of golf trip. Had seen a lot of negative reviews about both course and staff but that was not our experience. Yes there are patches where fairway is brown but lies not affected. Greens were good but difficult to read. Some really good holes with great views of bay. Service at check in and in bar excellent. Some very steep climbs so would definitely get a buggy next time!
