During the last week of October, the Tivoli Almansor Golf Classic took place with a field of almost 150 players, mostly from Ireland. The event commenced with a Texas Scramble at Salgados, won by the team of James Mason, Stanley Jelly, Robert Lipsett and Marie Duignam with 55 net. The main Stableford played over three rounds at Morgado, Salgados and the Vilamoura Old Course. There were daily prizes for the best scores for men and ladies, but the overall net winner was Mr. Pat Connolly with an outstanding 127 points, eight ahead of 2nd placed Michael Barret, with Mrs Catherine Connon third on 116. Tony Heverin won the gross prize for his score of 106 points.

Penina Championship

The 'Golf & Communication' circuit, now in its 14th year, included nine golf tournaments in 2004, four of which in the Algarve. In October, the last on was staged at the Le Meridien Penina championship course. About 100 golfers, mainly from the rest of continental Portugal and took part in the two-day 36-hole aggregate Stableford competition, blessed with the usual warm sunny weather. The best gross prize was won by Eng. Mario M. Pinto, former president of the Portuguese Golf Federation, who amassed 59 points. As for the net results, Antonio Santos, San Lorenzo golf director, won the 1st handicap division with 74 points, with the 2nd division prize going to Jose Vicente (76), both qualifying for the final in Thailand. Maria Trindade won the ladies' prize with 53 points, and Celestiano Henriques was the best senior player.
Victoria

Officially opened a few weeks previously, the Victoria course was the venue for a tournament held to raise funds for victims of the fires in the Caldeirao Hills during last summer. The individual Stableford tournament attracted 92 players who contributed generously to this worthy cause at the new Victoria course in Vilamoura. The amount raised was close to € 10,000 which helped alleviate in some small way the suffering of those whose lives have been affected. The three main prizes went to players of different nationalities: 1st Zhao Heng Yo (38 points); 2nd and 3rd – Jose Antonio Ferreira and Chris Norman respectively, both with 37.
Balaia

Ever since the Balaia nine-hole par-3 course near Albufeira opened in 2001 they have held regular tournaments. Thanks this year to the generosity of Graeme and Christine Mitchell from Scotland a new permanent annual Cup has been presented to Balaia. For those unfamiliar with the Scottish word 'quaich', this is a wide, silver 'cup of kindness' traditionally filled with whisky and passed round from one person to another. There were 62 players in the tournament played on an aggregate stroke-play pairs format, and the two-some of J. M. Rodrigues and Joao Figueiredo won with a net score of 55 strokes (1 over par).

Andre Stolz from Australia finished a stroke ahead of 3 players, Tom Lehman, Tag Ridings and Harrison Frazar, to win the Michelin Championship at Las Vegas, earning his first career title on the PGA TOUR. Andre moved up from 341 to become Nº 136. Brent Geiberger held off Michael Allen and Chris Smith to win the Chrysler Classic of Greensboro, the event his father Al won 28 years earlier, thus making the Geibergers the first father-son duo to win the same PGA TOUR event. Brent takes a leap of 131 places to reach Nº 88 in the World. Vijay Singh won the Chrysler Championship at Westin Innisbrook Golf Resort, Florida by a margin of five strokes from Jesper Parnevik and Tommy Armour III. Singh moved to a 1.93 average points lead over second placed Ernie Els in the Ranking who in turn stands 0.9 average points ahead of Tiger Woods in third place.

Stephen Gallacher - (Scotland) Dunhill Links Championship Old Course - St. Andrews - Carnoustie & Kingsbarns - Scotland - 7th to 10th October, 2004 Stephen Gallacher of Scotland clinched his first European Tour title with a play-off victory in the Dunhill Links Championship - the celebration of links golf - played over the Old Course at St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns. Gallacher took the title from Graeme McDowell at the first extra hole with a birdie three. He climbed 89 places in the Ranking to 68th position while McDowell jumps 28 places to Nº 63.

Ernie Els - (South Africa) HSBC World Match Play Championship Wentworth - Virginia Water - Surrey - England - 14th to 17th October, 2004 Ernie Els defeated Lee Westwood by 2&1 in the final of the HSBC World Match Play Championship at Wentworth Club and in addition to winning the richest 1st Prize in Golf of £1 million he consolidates his position as the World Number 2. Lee Westwood climbed 9 places to 30th in the Ranking.

Sergio Garcia - (Spain) Mallorca Classic Pula - Son Servera - Mallorca - Spain - 14th to 17th October, 2004 Sergio Garcia delighted his home crowd with a victory at the Mallorca Classic at Pula Golf Club. Sergio Garcia's third of the year placed him back into the World Rankings Top 10 suitably at Nº 10.

Richard Sterne - (South Africa) Open de Madrid Club de Campo - Madrid - Spain -21st to 24th October, 2004 With a win on the European with a two-stroke victory at the Open de Madrid at Club de Campo in Madrid, Richard Sterne from South Africa also picked up a career first. Richard Sterne then became Nº 202 in the Ranking List.

Ian Poulter - (England) Volvo Masters Andalucia Valderrama - Sotogrande - Spain - 28th to 31st October, 2004 Ian Poulter won the European Tour's season ending Volvo Masters Andalucia at Valderrama in Spain. He gained his win on the first hole of a sudden death play-off with Sergio Garcia. This was Ian Poulter's sixth European Tour victory and moved him from 55th to 35th in the Ranking. Sergio Garcia climbed one place to 9th in the World.
