After another exceptionally hot summer which extended into September which was tempered by a few rain showers, we are back into the golf season when one can witness hundreds of trolleys with golf bags being wheeled out of Faro airport. Some of the golf tourists come to play the courses just over the Spanish border along the Costa de la Luz. By far the vast majority are attracted to the thirty-odd fine courses spread along the coastline of the Algarve which is enjoying its second times award as the World's Best Golf Destination for 2006.

Quinta de Cima

Early in September the 4th Portuguese Cardiology Foundation tournament was played on the fine 18-hole course Quinta de Cima. Many of the 88 participants driving down from Lisbon and much further a field. The two-player better-ball team event was won by Tiago Almeida and Luis Pereira with a net medal score of 58 strokes, edging out two other teams with scores of 59 and 60.

As usual several charity events are held in the summer to raise funds. An example of such is the annual 'David Seaman Safe Hands Classic' at Parque da Floresta in the far western point of the region.

Former footballer, John Aldridge, is hosting the 5th edition of his 'Charity Classic' from 12th to the 14th October, with participants playing along with several celebrity footballers, jockeys Keiran Fallon and John Carroll, as well as Vince Earle the comedian. The golfing part of the programme takes place at the Palmares and Morgado courses.

The 2006 Ryder Cup The K Club - Straffan - Co. Kildare - Ireland - 22nd to 24th September, 2006 Europe won the Ryder Cup with 18 1/5 points to the USA with 9 1/5 points.

Bradley Dredge - (Wales) Omega European Masters Crans-sur-Sierre - Crans Montana - Switzerland - 7th to 10th September, 2006 With a two stroke lead Bradley Dredge from Wales gained a win over his nearest combined players on the European Tour. They were Francisco Molinari from Italy and Marcel Siem from Germany. The win took the Welshman to Nº 64 with an improvement of 27 places.

Paul Casey - (England) HSBC World Match Play Championship Wentworth - Virginia Water - Surrey - England - 14th to 17th September, 2006 Paul Casey of England created another record-breaking episode in the long history of the HSBC World Match Play Championship over sun-drenched days at Wentworth Club when he gained his biggest victory in all of 43 finals. Casey defeated a battle-weary Shaun Micheel of the United States by a whole 10 and 8 margin over the West Course. Paul Casey's win took him to Nº 17 with a rise of 10 places. Shaun Micheel jumped 21 positions to Nº 56.

Ian Poulter - (England) XXXII Banco Madrid Valle Romano Open de Madrid La Moraleja II - Madrid - Spain - 14th to 17th September, 2006 Successful Ian Poulter from England scored up another victory on the European Tour when he achieved his win at the Open de Madrid in Spain. He finished five shots clear of Ignacio Garrido from Spain with Philip Price one shot further back. Ian Poulter moved back into the World Top 50 in 45th place.

Tiger Woods - (USA) WGC - American Express Championship The Grove - Chandlers Cross - Hertfordshire - England - 28th to 1st October, 2006 Tiger Woods from thew USA added to his impressive total of wins on the European Tour with another victory finishing an impressive eight strokes ahead of his nearest rivals, Ian Poulter from England and Adam Scott from Australia.
