Morgado European Tour - Dustin Johnson Mon, 25th Feb 2019 Mexico Championship - Mexico City - Mexico - 21st to 24th February, 2019. American golfer Dustin Johnson added another victory to his European Tour total when he won his seventh in Mexico with a healthy margin of five strokes. In second place was Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy and in third position five strokes further back were both Paul Casey and Kiradech Aphibarnrat. Dustin Johnson moved to third place in the World Rankings. |

I have just called Morgado and Alamos and the courses will be in good condition in mid October. Both courses have undergone maintenance over the summer with Morgado being closed for over a month. The reviews mostly stem from the greens having some left over sand on them due to hollow coring . If we can be of any further assistance, please just let us know and we will be happy to help. |

Mon, 14th May 2018 Portugal Open - Morgado - Portimao - Algarve - Portugal - 10th to 13th May, 2018. The previously 'Open de Portugal' has now been reconstituted as the 'Portugal Open' and moved from the European Tour over to the Challenge Tour. The first of this lesser value competition was won by the Australian golfer Dimitrios Papadatos by two strokes from both local golfer Jose-Filipe Lima and France's Antoine Rozner. Dimitrios Papadatos moved to 230 position in the World Rankings and 207th in the Race to Dubai. |

Germany’s Sebastian Heisele lay second with 14 under par. In third place was England’s Sam Walker with 13 under par. Matthieu Pavon from France had 12 strokes under par and Tapio Pulkkanen from Finland had 11 strokes. Following this group were eight other golfers with 10 strokes under par. |

This time the 18-hole medal-play tournament was won by Lagos GC member Jose Armando Rodrigues with a 2-under-par net score of 71 after a count-back with Peter Mills (Penina GC) and Antonio Gloria (Carvoeiro GC) who were awarded the 2nd and 3rd prizes respectively. |

Penina Championship Fri, 1st May 2009 The inaugural John Stilwell's Trophy was a great success and attracted a field of close to a 100 players for the 18-hole individual Stableford tournament played over the Sir Henry Cotton Championship course at the Penina. Former honorary British Consul in the Algarve, Dr. Jose Pearce de Azevedo, was on hand at the prize-giving lunch and gave an interesting speech to honour Mr. John Stilwell for his pioneering spirit in bringing golf to the Algarve in the early 1960s. The Penina Hotel Operations Manager Mathieu de Tonnac and Golf Manager Leonel Rio presented the prizes with first place going to Sr. Gomes Mota who scored 41 points. Mota's 21 points on the back nine against 19 separated him from 2nd placed Giuseppe Ghezzo who also scored a total of 41 points. John Russell was 3rd, only one point further back. |

Alamos Mon, 1st Dec 2008 The twelve mixed pairs who qualified from all the regional qualifying events in the UK battled for the '2008 Bader Cup' played over the Alamos course and on the Morgado course near Portimao. In the end it was Tony Stamper, who plays off a 10 handicap and his wife Dawn (26) from Keswick Golf Club in the Lake District who eased to victory with a better-ball tally of 46 Stableford points, three clear of fellow playing competitors Adam Winthrop and Lucy Eaton from Skipton in Yorkshire. The Stampers, who won their regional qualifier at Darlington GC, were unaware that this victory earned them entry into next year's final, and were naturally overjoyed at their successful campaign. |

Penina Championship Fri, 1st Aug 2008 The 'Golfe e Comunicacao' series of tournaments played throughout Portugal which is now in its 18th year, is run by Mario Carvalhosa. In 2008 it includes eleven 36-hold individual Stableford events, eight of which in the Algarve plus one each at Montebelo in the north, the Azores archipelago (Furnas and Batalha courses), and finally at the Ballesteros designed layout on Porto Santo Island (near Madeira). The net winners in two handicap divisions of these 11 tournaments qualify to play in a grand final that takes place early next year near Capetown, South Africa. An impressive list of sponsors provide support and prizes, names such as Le Meridien, Black & Decker, Europcar, Johnnie Walker, Lacoste, Luso mineral water, Nevada Bob's Golf shops, Sata Airlines and Solverde Casinos, to mention a few. The latest tournament was staged at the Penina Sir Henry Cotton course where several fantastic scores were returned. Pedro Saldanha taking the scratch to 12 handicap division with an aggregate of 78 points, and Joao Navega won the 12.1 to 18 handicap division with the same tally. Other main prize-winners at the event were: Constantin Schmid (best gross), Fatima Pita (best lady) and Antonio Osorio (best senior). |

Penina Championship Sun, 1st Jun 2008 Sir Henry Cooper and his merry band of celebrities played alongside other contributing amateurs in their annual visit to the Penina Golf & Resort for the 'Sir Henry Cooper Charity Golf Classic' and that of the late Mike Reid. A total of 23 four-player teams took part in practice rounds as well as the main 54-hole tournament over the Palmares, Boavista and Penina courses. Martin Herdman and his 'Sony Walkman' team put up a brave defense of their title with 247 Stableford points, but ended up six behind the 2008 winners 'Agency One' comprising actor Kevin Whately, Max Morgan, Andy Parry and Hugh Bush. Comedian Paul Thornley's' team, 'Return of the Red Eye' came in 2nd with 250 points, followed by the Penina team (249) captained by actor Nick Burns, and a Bill Goff team led by Graham Bradley, the jockey. The best individual celebrity score over the three rounds was carded by football coach, Brian Kidd, with 112 points, two clear of Nick Burns. Actor J.J. Field scored 109 and actor/comedian Simon Farnaby came in 4th place with a round 100. |

The first round of the main event is played at Palmares on 12th May, then play continues at the Boavista course on the 15th May, and culminates at Penina the following day. Penina Championship Tue, 1st Apr 2008 The Penina Golf & Resort has now re-opened its totally refurbished and expanded driving range and practice facilities, with the addition of five target greens on the 4-hectare area. To improve drainage, the site was built up with a 50-cm. layer of soil and it was entirely re-seeded. Apart from a new irrigation system, the facilities include a new putting-green, chipping-green and practice bunker. Up to 70 players can now practice simultaneously at the Penina range from grassed bays, making it one of the largest of its kind in Europe. |

Alto Golf Fri, 1st Feb 2008 Further improvements to the Alto Golf & Country Club are taking place, coinciding with considerable restructuring of the resort. In January, the complex announced that Commandant Jose Barroso Pereira and Dr. Nuno Barroso Pereira had acquired a significant stake in the business. More golf course maintenance equipment, re-fitting of the golf shop and major landscaping improvements to the clubhouse surrounds are some of the projects under way. Mr. Ed Edwards has been appointed as the new Resort Director, having previously held senior management positions in golf resorts in the USA, Egypt, Oman and Ireland and consultancy roles with golf developments worldwide. |

Based at the Hotel Penina, the group played at the San Lorenzo, Palmares, Boavista and Penina Championship courses. The winning team with 247 points was headed by Martin Herdman, a multi-talented former Olympic and professional boxer, international rugby league player, musician, singer and shopkeeper, and now also a well-known TV and film actor. His team members were Jason Preston, Mark King and Kevin Fox. Ex-speedway ace, Dave Jessup won the individual celebrity prize with a 3-round tally of 109 points, 12 ahead of both Clive Russell and Mike Reid. |

Eighty golfers took part in this stroke-play event, now in its 18th year, and with the Maestro's Championship Course in fine condition, Nuno Faustino carded 71 net to take the historical trophy. There was a tie for 2nd on 74 net for the runner-up spot which was attributed to Getulio Jorge on a count-back, leaving Leslie Harris with the third place prize. Sebastian Crookall-Nixon won the best gross in the Mens division with a fine score of 76 (3 over par), and Balaia Village golf manager, Maria Jose Pinto, returned 90 gross to win the Ladies prize. |

Alamos Fri, 1st Dec 2006 Lady Joan Bader was back in the Algarve again this November to officiate at the grand final of 'The Bader Cup'. This annual mixed-greensomes Stableford event involves 12 regional finals that are played throughout the UK and has now been staged for some 20 years. This year's grand final took place at the recently opened Alamos course with its cunningly contoured greens and a variety of interesting holes in the beautiful rural setting north of Portimao. On the day it was 8-handicapper Simon Smith and his school teacher wife Jill, members of the Rye Hill Golf Club, who produced the best rounds by carding a total of 43 points to receive the coveted cup from Lady Bader. She being the widow of the famed World War ace pilot Douglas Bader, and President of the Foundation set up in his name shortly after he passed away in 1982. Three points behind the winners were Anthony Thompson and Linda Farrington (Fishwick Hall), followed by Steven Frazer and Elizabeth Morgan (Callander) with 39 pts. The 'Douglas Bader Foundation' is a charitable institution that aids the disabled, and the many golfers have collectively raised over £300,000 during the years for its worthy cause. |

Alamos Fri, 1st Sep 2006 On 6th and 7th of November, some local preparatory competitions are being held for the grand final on the 8th to decide the winners of the '2006 Douglas Bader Cup'. This tournament is being held under the auspices of the 'Douglas Bader Foundation' for the 20th successive year. Regional qualifying events were held throughout the UK, and the winning mixed greensome pairs in each of twelve UK regional finals during the summer earned places in the Algarve Grand Final on the Alamos course. Lady Bader OBE, widow of the famous and legendary ace pilot, attended this event last year and it is hoped she will be able to grace the event with her presence once more. |

Morgado Sat, 1st Jul 2006 The 54-hole Portuguese PGA event staged at the Morgado course near Portimao was won convincingly by Antonio Sobrinho sponsered by Vale do Lobo with an aggregate of 14 under par 205, nine strokes clear of Nuno Campino (Paco do Lumiar/Callaway). Sobrinho, second in the national Order of Merit behind Jose Filipe Lima, who presently plays on the European Tour. In the opening round he established a new course record of 64 on the par 73 layout and giving him an unassailable lead. Alfonso Mohedano (Andaluzia PGA), was third, followed by Ricardo Santos (Lusotur Golfes), Sean Hawker (Prosecom) and Christian Wesserlund (Quinta da Ria) tied 4th on 2 under par. The Pro-Am was won by Morgado resident pro, Nelson Cavalheiro, partnered by the course golf director Jorge Papa with a score of 64 after a count-back. |

Alamos Thu, 1st Jun 2006 The Alamos course at Morgado de Reguengo is now in fully playable condition after its completion was seriously hindered firstly by the 2004/5 drought and then some torrential rainfalls last winter. It has several tight fairways, and a number of severely undulating greens that will test the patience of all standards of golfers. One of the first local tournaments to be held on the scenic layout is the 36-hole 'Solverde Algarve Amateur Challenge' is taking place on 1st-2nd June, simultaneously with a local PGA event at the Morgado course on the same complex. On 31st May, the amateurs in this Challenge event played in a one-on-one medal play Pro-Am with members of the Portuguese PGA. |

Morgado Thu, 1st Jun 2006 In mid-May, the Morgado course also hosted the 'Oceanico International Open', a PGA EuroPro tournament with a £75,000 prize fund. Played in beautiful sunny, but somewhat breezy weather - in contrast to the previous wet EuroPro event with gale-force winds on Sao Miguel Island in the Azores archipelago. The title was decided after the 2nd hole of a sudden-death play-off between Adam Frayne (St. Mellion) and Zane Scotland of Woodcote Park, both after finishing on 14-under 205. Aussie Daniel Gaunt almost joined them on that total but scored bogey on the par-4 final hole. After both leaders bogeyed the first play-off hole on the 18th, they returned to the tee but Frayne's 2-putt par was good enough to edge out Scotland who failed to get up and down to keep the contest alive. Local brothers Ricardo and Hugo Santos, graduates of the successful Vilamoura Golf Club junior golf school, came in 9th equal on 8 under par. Ricardo recovered well after a horrendous 9 on the par-5 third to score level par 73 on the opening day, following this with a 67 and 72. |

Penina Championship Thu, 1st Jun 2006 The Penina Championship course staged its annual tournament for the prestigious Sir Henry Cotton Trophy on the final Sunday in May. Local knowledge was obviously the key to winning as club members were well represented in the five leading players. It was the lady captain, Ulla Bischoff, who had her name engraved on the cup by carding a 4-under score of 69. Three strokes behind her were Doug Moody, Pedro Rio and Pim Hirschmann, followed by Peter Hills in 5th place on level-par 73. Prizes for the best ladies and mens gross scores went to Ann Munro (88 strokes) and Steve Juster with a well gained 75. |

Playing in this Penina based event for the sixth time, the well-known TV and film actor was pleased as punch to win the main 54-hole competition leading his Herald Graphics team to victory with a score of 236 Stableford points. Clive Russell's Regal Bandits were the runner-up team on 233, closely followed by the Sony 3 team headed by Clive Abbot another shot adrift. The event raised a sizable sum for children's charities and was played on Sky Sports TV. |

Alto Golf Thu, 1st Jun 2006 On the 10th of June, the Alto Golf will be holding the annual 'Norman Collisson Trophy Texas Scramble' for teams of eight golfers. This is usually a well-contested tournament where plenty tactics as well as good golf are predominate. The event takes place close to the 15th anniversary of the opening of this course in Alvor. |

Penina Championship Mon, 1st May 2006 From 14th to 19th May, the Penina is hosting the 8th 'Sir Henry Cooper & Mike Reid Charity Golf Classic' with many sports and entertainment celebrities who play alongside teams of three amateur golfers to raise funds for good causes. The famous celebrates coming this year are: Sir Henry Cooper, Mike Reid, Clive Abbot, Michael Greco, Willie Thorne, Tim Healy, Sion Tudor Owen, Gareth Hunt, Dave Jessup, Dennis Waterman, Kenny Lynch, Berni Flint, Johnny Briggs, PH Moriarty, John Dymond, Stan Boardman, Robert Pugh and Allan Wells. Apart from playing twice on the Penina course, the participants will also have competition rounds at Boavista, San Lorenzo and Palmares. On Sunday the 28th, Penina will also be holding their annual 'Sir Henry Cotton Trophy', a traditional tournament on the Algarve golfing calendar. |

Penina Championship Sat, 1st Apr 2006 Paul Broadhurst - (England) Algarve Open de Portugal Penina Golf & Resort - Portimao - Portugal - 30th to 2nd April, 2006 Many golfers will have watched Paul Broadhurst's successful defense of his last year's Portuguese Open title on TV. This was the 10th time it was staged at the Sir Henry Cotton Championship course at Penina, and was also the 50th Portuguese Open. It took place in ideal Algarve weather, with the main difficulty being the rough which had been allowed to grow and causing players to place a premium on precision driving and approach shots. In fact, that proved to be the secret of Paul Broadhurst's victory, allied to some inspired putting on the large, immaculate greens. When the long-hitting Argentine, Ricardo Gonzalez snatched a 1-stroke lead after a 3rd round record-equaling 64 to go 13 under par, it seemed that he would follow this up with a win. Especially after Paul Broadhurst, the 18- and 36-hole leader, had stumbled to a double bogey and a bogey birdie finish in his 3rd round. But it was Ricardo Gonzalez who faltered right from the start of the last round with errant driving and failed to find the fairway off the tee on the opening 5 holes which he still covered in level par. Paul Broadhurst picked up 4 birdies over these holes and was only eventually threatened by surges from two other players. The talented Argentine, 24-year-old rookie Andres Romero, who scored 30 for the front nine, and Anthony Wall, who scored 3 birdies in the last 4 holes and carded his 3rd consecutive 67, in spite of having a 10-foot putt on the 17th lip out of the hole. Paul Broadhurst had a few scares with wayward shots over the closing holes, including a tee-shot into the lake on the 185-metre 13th for a double bogey, and a dropped shot on the 17th. In the press interview afterwards Paul Broadhurst admitted he did not know how he stood in the competition until the 18th tee when he learned that he required a birdie on the last hole. He proceeded to achieve this with a chip from the back left of the green and leaving him a virtual tap-in for his 1-stroke victory. As far as local golfers are concerned, only Tiago Cruz who had recently turned Pro, had managed to pass the 36-hole cut and he ended on 2 over par in a tie for 67th place. |

Penina Championship Wed, 1st Mar 2006 The next big upcoming attraction golf-wise is the 'Portuguese Open' that returns to Sir Henry Cotton's Championship course at Penina (March 30 to April 2). The winner of this important competition when last held at the Penina was Miguel Angel Jimenez from Spain and nicknamed 'The Mechanic'. Since he now actively plays most of his golf on the USPGA Tour it is unlikely that he will be back to defend his title. The surprise winner last year of the 'Portuguese Open' which was staged on the Oitavos course near Cascais was Paul Broadhurst. He won his title after several players ruined their last round cards on the few closing holes. We anticipate some big names taking part at the Penina this year as the need for Ryder Cup points becomes more pressing. |

Morgado Thu, 1st Dec 2005 The Final of the 'Bader Cup' took place over the Morgado Course, and was won by the Gareth Francis and his fiancee Emily-Kate Brown from the Benton Hall Golf Club in Essex with a better-ball Stableford score of 51 points. They gained their trip to the Algarve, by winning their regional final at Ely City, and competed against 11 other regional final mixed-couple winners throughout the UK. Lady Joan Bader O.B.E. was present at the prize-giving gala dinner. Around 500 golfers take part in the UK regional finals and the funds raised are donated to the 'Douglas Bader Foundation' established in the name of the famed WWII pilot (and golfer) who lost his legs in a flying accident in 1931. The Foundation helps children and adult amputees and others with physical disabilities. |

Penina Championship Sat, 1st Oct 2005 On 20th September, the PGA European Tour and the Le Meridien Hotel Group announced that the 'Algarve Open de Portugal'is to be held once again at Penina's designed by Sir Henry Cotton and the first Championship course to be built in the Algarve. First held here in 1973 the next year's Open will be the tenth time it will be staged at this venerable course. |

Alto Golf Fri, 1st Jul 2005 The 'Norman Collisson Foundation Cup' organised by Alto Golf is played annually played by teams of 8 golfers in two flights of four, on an aggregate Texas Scramble format based on one-eighth of the total handicap of each flight. The Lagos Golf Society team won the cup with 117.8 strokes net, followed by the Alto 'B' Team (119.4) and the Carvoeiro Team with (122.8). |

Alamos Fri, 1st Apr 2005 Golf continues to expand in the Algarve and three new projects have been started. The most advanced is the Alamos course which should be ready toward the end of this year. It will be located alongside the Morgado do Reguengo course but will not have a playing length as long as the latter. |
