At the 72-hole European Senior Tour Qualifying School finals at the Vale da Pinta course, 52-year-old Jimmy Heggarty from Northern Ireland came back from a seven shot deficit going into the last round to card a 4-under score of 67 and lead the field, thus gaining his full card to play the Tour in 2009. South African Bertus Smit tied the Ulsterman's aggregate score of 277 but the latter earned top honours as Smit post a level par 71 in round four. Alfonso Barrera also escaped with his card, and in fact would have been the outright winner, had he not been penalized two strokes for practicing a putt that he had missed on the third green. While positions seven to fourteen gain cards in Category Nine from the Qualifying School Final, a further 12 players gained playing privileges for 2009 as Allan, Towne and Michael Lord all celebrate their 50th birthdays, and thus gaining eligibility for the Senior Tour, during the course of the 2009 season. The remaining four players to gain full playing privileges were Englishmen Peter Allan and Kevin Spurgeon, Alfonso Barrera from Argentina as well as U.S. pro, Greg Towne who led until scoring an almost disastrous 42 on the last nine holes.

The 'Algarve Ladies Open', an official Ladies European Tour event, took place on the par-72 Gramacho Course near Carvoeiro. After the first two of the three scheduled rounds, the cut was set at 5 over par. A total of 70 players passed the cut, and leading the field going into the 3rd and final round were four players tied on 7 under par: Jade Schaeffer and Sophie Giquel from France, Australian Joanne Mills, and Louise Stahle from Sweden. The scene was set for a close finish but by the fourteenth hole it came down to a duel between Sophie Giquel and Louis Stahle, with the latter leading until she bogeyed the tricky par-four 16th after failing to get down in two from a green-side bunker. The Frenchwoman parred the hole and then sank a lengthy downhill putt for birdie on the next green to lead by a single stroke. On the decisive par-5 last hole, most of the pressure was on the Swede to try and force a playoff, but she hit her second shot into a deep bunker in front of the green. Sophie Giquel confidently struck her long-iron approach to the back fringe and then chipped to about two feet for a birdie and a 10 under par total to win her maiden victory less than four years after turning pro, and just 11 days before her 25th birthday. On the same round, Lisa Hall scored a rare albatross on the 18th, and another Lisa (Sorensen) from Denmark sank her approach to the tricky par-4 uphill fifth hole.

There was an exciting conclusion to the PGA European Seniors Tour qualifying school staged at the Vale da Pinta course in the Carvoeiro area. All the usual sudden death play-offs for the top six full cards and 11 provisional cards for the 2007 Seniors Tour season created a sense of keen competition. However, two players created a stir when Spain's excitable Emílio Rodriguez and the much calmer David Merriman from Australia, tied on 9 under par and fought out a sudden death decider for the £3,500 (€5,168) winner's cheque. It was the Australian club pro from Sydney who triumphed at the 2nd play-off hole, a par-5 fourth hole, calmly sinking a 14-foot birdie putt after Rodriguez failed to reach the green in three following a wayward fairway wood 2nd shot ended up blocked out in the right-hand rough. David Merriman had previously said: 'As a golf pro you want to play competitive golf, so I thought I would come over to Europe and give it a crack'. Winning the event was the icing on the cake for him.

At the Vale de Pinta Course the PGA European Seniors Tour Qualifying School Finals were also affected by storm damage on the opening day but course maintenance staff, aided by many volunteers, made massive efforts to make the course playable. Full cards to play on the 2006 Tour were available for the top six players and conditional ones for a further eleven. It was 56-year-old Aussie, Stewart Ginn who came out on top with a steady 72-hole total of 274 (10 under par), with only 4 dropped shots. Until now Ginn who plays on the US Champions Tour, and winner at the 'Ford Seniors Players Championship' (one of the majors in 2003), he now wants to change his career and succeed on the European Tour. Winning the Q-School is a tonic to Stewart Ginn's aspirations. The other full cards went to Kurt Cox (USA), Bobby Lincoln and Bertus Smit (SA), Stephen Chadwick (Eng), and Rigoberto Velasquez who will turn 50 in September. His place until then will be taken by Angel Fernandez from Chile. Amongst the winners of conditional cards, who were involved in playoffs to secure them, was our Brian Evans the local Pro at Pinheiros Altos.

The important golf event of the month was the 'Portuguese Ladies Open', part of the Ladies European Tour and played over 54 holes again on the Gramacho course. The original sponsor of this event that offered the prize money of 300,000 Euros did not reach an agreement with the authorities, but happily in April an eleventh hour replacement backer was found. With the short time then still available and together with the on-going drought in the Algarve, it was difficult to put the course into the perfect playing condition required. Considering this factor and the unusual prevailing strong winds there were some excellent scores returned. After a 1st round of 5 strokes over par it seemed that Cecilia Ekelundh from Sweden would not retain the title after her maiden tournament win last year at Aroeira near Lisbon. However, she rallied with rounds of 66 and 67 winning by 3 strokes from Ludivine Kreutz of France. Aussie Cherie Byrnes and another French player Gwladys Nocera were placed a stroke further behind in equal 3rd position.
