Interclub Algarve - Vila Sol - Vilamoura - Algarve -28th November, 2017.

A total of 18 Algarve Golf Clubs participated in the annual Finals Day of the Interclub Algarve. Top prize was taken by the Alto Club team from Alvor, followed by Levante Club and third by Vilamoura Club.

European Disabled Golf Algarve Open

EDGA Algarve Open - Vila Sol - Vilamoura - Algarve - Portugal - 23rd to 25 November, 2017.

Seventy international members of the EDGA participated in this important event. Belgium's Adem Wahbi was the final winner with two Englishmen, George Groves and Kevin Harmison tied for second place.

Old Village Golf Classic

For the 18th time the “Old Village Golf Classic” was held on the Vila Sol course near to Vilamoura. There were 45 participants and the winner was Pam Forster for the Ladies and Jim Finn for the Men.
The Old Village International Golf Classic

The 17th Old Village International Golf Classic - Vila Sol - Algarve.

A total of 43 players played to win the several trophies that were available. The 'Ladies Owners Trophy' went to Heather Ward, the 'Men Owners Trophy' went to Wolfgang Knust, and the 'Guests Trophy' was won by Gerry Royanne.

Readers of British magazine 'Today's Golfer'have voted the Vila Sol Golf Resort next to Vilamoura as the best resort of its kind in Europe.

One of Vila Sol's main tournaments of the year is the 'Sir Bobby Robson Celebrity Golf Classic' and on 4th July, a large number of famous footballers of years gone by were seen playing on the championship course near Vilamoura joining as part of teams composed with amateur golfers from the general public. This was the 6th Classic event and as usual funds are raised to help the Refugio Aboim Ascensao, a children's home run by Dr. Luis Villas-Boas in Faro. In spite of his poor health, Sir Bobby Robson attended the event with his wife Elsie and was enthusiastically applauded during the gala dinner.

Another tournament with a strong international flavour held in November was the 36-hole Vila Sol Golf Challenge which involved teams from 13 countries in Europe and North America where a total of 50 qualifying events were staged throughout the year. In addition to Vila Sol Resort. The format for the 2-golfer teams, divided into three handicap divisions, was better ball on the first day and foursomes on the second, and then the twelve teams with the best scores went into a deciding sudden death play-off. In 1st place were UK couple Wendy and Jamie Stewart, followed by Felix Hanneman/Tim Beredsen (Germany) and Jonas Aberg/Sven-Goran Davidson (Sweden). Prizes were also awarded for the best scores from the different nations that took part and the Swedes with an average score of 65 Stableford points edged out the Germans (63.92 pts.) with Canada taking third place (61.66 pts).

We mentioned Alan Shearer in last month's newsletter and he remained in the Algarve for the 'Mackenzie Sir Bobby Robsons 5th Celebrity Golf Classic' at Vila Sol on 5th July. This charity event raises funds for the Refugio Aboim Ascensao in Faro that looks after about 95 children up to the age of 5. Many other celebrities supported the tournament and its fund-raising activities, including Portuguese internationals Paulo Sousa and Ricardo, as well as Ron Atkinson, Martin Chivers, Pat Jennings, Alan Brazil, Francis Lee, Tim Brooke-Taylor, Kenny Dalglish, Steve Bruce, Mick McCarthy, George Burley, Ray Clemence, Jonny Gould and Sam Allardyce and others. Several autographed football shirts, memorabilia, etc. were auctioned off during the gala dinner and the total raised for the home was about € 72,000, including a Ronaldo shirt that fetched £ 6,000. As for the tournament, the Optimum Consultancy team captained by former Manchester United player Frank Stapleton scooped the top prize with 88 Stableford points, one more than three teams including the one with afore-mentioned Portuguese players plus other former footballers Carlos Xavier and Frederico Rosa.

To coincide with the recent launch of Pine Hills Residences, a complex being built at Vila Sol, the developers held a team event at this well-known popular golf venue and host to the Portuguese Open back in 1992 and 1993. The winning team comprising Ivan Taylor, David Cummings and Stephen Clare scored 90 Stableford points, and Alex Storm, partnered by Tony and Yvonne Gilbert-Harris, edged out the team of Tony Scott, Lenny McGeoch and Amy Bray after a count-back as both had tied with 85 points.

The 'Mackenzie Sir Bobby Robson Golf Classic 2007' held on the Vila Sol Course at Vilamoura, on the 2nd June was a another yearly success. The event raised about €60,000 for the Aboim Ascencao, an emergency home for infants in Faro. Numerous famous football players and celebrities from the UK, Ireland and Portugal took part in the friendly but competitive team event. An auction was held during the Gala Dinner for many items of football memorabilia. The winning team of Guy Lissimore, Kamran Aziz, Geoff Newton and Andy Townsend amassed 89 Stableford points, edging out the 'Alamo Avengers – 88' (Adam Masterson, Kevin Hall, Gerry McDermott, and Nigel Spackman) by a single point.

The 3rd 'Vila Sol Golf Junior Open' takes place on the 21st of July with several competitions organised according to age and/or handicap groups.

Vila Sol is holding an international Golf Challenge involving a total of 68 qualifying rounds at selected courses in 15 countries in both Europe and North America. The event has the backing of the Tourist Board and other tourist orientated associations and the sponsorship of several private companies. The qualifying competitions started in March and will end in October and the finals will be held on 18th and 19th of November on both the Vila Sol and Victoria courses in Vilamoura.

The 'Vila Sol Barclays European Masters', a PGA Europro Tour event, was a resounding success for 'local golfer Angolan-born Antonio Sobrinho, a 9-time Portuguese PGA Order of Merit winner, who took the £15,000 first place cheque after completing the 54 holes in 209 (7-under par). Recovering from his opening round of 75, Sobrinho then set a record of 65 for the recently updated course. His final round of 69 proved too good for the 2nd round leader, 24-year Dutchman Inder van Weerelt, who was brought up in the Algarve and started playing golf at the age of six in Vilamoura Golf School.

The Vila Sol course recently hosted a new 18-hole golf tournament, the 'Vila Sol Spa and Golf Trophy', with many socialites and press representatives from both the Algarve and Lisbon area taking part. The guests stayed at the new 5-star hotel alongside the course and were invited to try out a variety of therapeutic and well-being treatments available at Vila Sol's well equipped Spa. A total of 58 golfers played in the individual Stableford tournament which was won by Elza Honorio who scored 43 points playing off a 35 handicap, followed by Madalena Simoes de Almeida (38 pts.). The gross prize went to 19 handicapper Domingos R. Pinho 27 pts.

Vila Sol has appointed Peter Lester to be the resident professional at its recently upgraded Golf Academy beside the resort's new 5-star hotel and its 27-hole Donald Steel designed course. Originally from Scunthorpe, Peter turned Pro in 1978 and has worked in several European countries and has taken part in many golf schools and training camps held in the Algarve. The Vila Sol Golf Academy is well equipped and includes swing analysis and recording equipment as well an extensive practice area. Peter Lester has started to develop junior golf for students at local participating schools.

Vila Sol held their 12th 'Anniversary Invitational Tournament', a Texas Scramble event, was followed by a great evening party with an African theme. The winning team with its net score of 55 strokes comprised of Rodrigo and Frederico Fragoso Fernandes, Alexandre Barroso and Ricardo Oliveira.
