Golf in Lagos
LAGOS,
The historic and attractive town of Lagos has always been a very popular destination for tourists to the Algarve. It was from Lagos harbour that Vasco da Gama sailed in 1499 on his historic and epic voyage of discovery. As a visitor drives into the town the Boat Marina harbour presents a lovely picture. Further in the strong battlements present a picture of the importance it has played in history. Amongst the ancient buildings is Europe's oldest standing slave market.
At night the crowds spill over into the many narrow streets creating a lively and happy atmosphere with a plentiful choice of bars and restaurants.
In the vicinity of Lagos are three excellent golf courses. The 27-hole Palmares Golf Course lies to the east overlooking the Bay of Lagos. The 18-hole Boavista Golf Course lies on the west and is within minutes drive from the town. Further to the north is the 18-hole Espiche Golf Course which is the newest addition to the golfing scene in the Algarve.
SAGRES,
The small town of Sagres is located next to the most south-western point of Europe named Cape St. Vincent. The high vertical cliffs in Sagres are dramatic to view as they are pounded by the Atlantic Ocean. It was here in the 15th century that the famous Prince Henry the Navigator built his school devoted to navigation and exploration. The local restaurants are renowned for serving a variety of fresh fish and shellfish.
VILA DO BISPO,
Since 1898 the town of Vila do Bispo was granted as the admistration town of the area. However, its existance is first recorded as a village in the 14th century but humans were occupiing the area back in the mist of time.
Approximately halfway on the road between the town of Lagos and Sagres is the small village of Budens. It is here that golfers will find the 18-hole Santo Antonio Golf Course.

Building Site with a Poorly maintained golf course
I had booked 2 rounds at Palmares from the UK and was looking forward to playing a course that I have thoroughly enjoyed on many previous occasions. Unfortunately, the course now has the feel of a dried out municipal course suffering from neglect.
I remember not too long ago playing Palmares and being very impressed with the conditioning of the course. The tees were almost like the greens at my home course! Unfortunately, this is now not the case. I would be surprised if there are worse greens on the Algarve. I’ve attached a photo to show the problems that were typical of every green on the Praia/Alvor combo.
When you arrive at the complex you are immediately aware of the huge amount of construction going on. There are staff trying to sell you apartments and plots and there is even a Michelin star restaurant in the clubhouse.
All this is fine, but a golfer who is paying >€150 for a round just wants a good course to play.
Needless to say I cancelled the 2nd round that I had booked and I would not recommend this course to be on anyone’s schedule until they put as much resources in to the course as they are in to the building work.

Anspruchsvoll
Wegen der Hanglagen und einiger „blind“ zu spielender Schläge ein ausgesprochen anspruchsvoller Platz. Hier muss strategisch clever gespielt werden, wenn man reüssieren will. Der Platz liegt wunderschön im hügeligen Gelände und die Nutzung eines Buggys sollte beim ersten Mal hilfreich sein, um sich gut auf den nächsten Schlag vorzubereiten. Tolle Fairways und für portugiesische Verhältnisse langsame aber faire Greens. Einziges Manko: die Hinweisschilder zu und an den Bahnen sind manchmal schwer zu finden. Aber gerne wieder

Golf round
Played today at Palmares fantastic course expected it to be in poor condition however the course is in great shape now with many greens been re turfed and speed was ok regarding all the work that has been done well done to the greens team enjoyed every hole will come back soon
