Welcome to the April 2010 edition of "Golf in Portugal" Newsletter

 

The "LUCKY GOLFER" prize

 


Each month 10 names are randomly selected from all golfers that have used our online Booking Form. From these 10 golfers a second draw is made for the winner of the prize sponsored by Le Meridien Hotel Penina ***** and Golf Course, and Dona Filipa Hotel ***** & San Lorenzo Golf Course in the Algarve. The monthly prize includes a standard "weekend break accommodation" with breakfast for two in the Hotel specified, together with a round of golf for two guests on the course attached to the Hotel.

All of the 10 golfers of each month will be listed in our Newsletter and notified by separate e-mail. The nominated golfers who were drawn for the month of April 2010 are listed below.

Anthony Kim claimed his third PGA Tour victory with a play-off victory over Vaughn Taylor at the Shell Houston Open in Texas. Taylor birdied the last for a fourth round 68, four-under while Kim's final bogey saw him card a final round of 70, two-under par, which meant a play-off. The two returned again to the 18th where at the first extra hole Kim won with a par 4. The win took Kim to World Nš 14, a jump of 12 places.

Richard Karlberg of Sweden rounded off a superb week to lift his maiden Asian Tour title in style at the SAIL Open on Friday. The Asian Tour rookie, who held the lead from the first round, closed with a superb six-under-par 66 for a winning aggregate of 20-under-par 268 and beating joint overnight leader India’s Shiv Kapur by five shots at the Delhi Golf Club. Winning the first OWGR Points of his career, Karlberg jumps to World Nš 418.

Liang Wen-Chong from China claimed the Luxehills Chengdu Open on the OneAsia Tour after a play-off victory over Korean Kim Hyung-tae. Liang birdied the first extra hole on the par-five 18th to win and climbed to World Nš 80, a jump of 10 places.

Phil Mickelson picked up a third Masters Tournament victory in seven years with a final round of 67 for a 16-under-par total of 272, ahead of Lee Westwood who shot a final round of 71 for second place. The Champion at Augusta in 2004 and 2006 and with a US PGA title in between, Mickelson's bogey free final round gave him his fourth Major Championship win. Mickelson moves back to World Nš 2 and the gap between himself and Tiger Woods, who finished fourth, is 2.58 average OWGR points.

James Morrison secured his maiden European Tour title at the Madeira Islands Open BPI - Portugal after holding off a determined charge from Oliver Fisher. Overnight leader Morrison carded a final round of 70 to finish on 20 under par, one clear of Fisher who roared into contention with a host of birdies on the final day. With this win Morrison, a former England youth cricketer, jumped 174 positions to World Nš 182.

Japan’s Tetsuji Hiratsuka claimed his maiden Asian Tour title with an emphatic 10-stroke victory at the Air Bagan Myanmar Open presented by IBTC. After two third place finishes this season, Hiratsuka posted a brilliant final round six-under-par 66 for a winning total of 24-under-par 264, which tied the fourth biggest margin of victory on the Asian Tour. The win takes Hiratsuka to World Nš 124 a climb of 38 places.


 
Jim Furyk won the Verizon Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina at the first extra hole in a play-off with his final round playing partner, England's Brain Davis. The pair tied on 13-under-par 271 and Furyk prevailed with a par 4 after Davis found the Calibogue Sound with his second shot and then incurred a two-stroke penalty with his recovery after touching a loose impediment with his club on the backswing. Furyk moved up to World Nš 5 and Davis broke into the World Top 100 in 98th position.

At the European Tour and OneAsia Tour co-sanctioned Volvo China Open the US PGA Champion Y.E. Yang secured a two stroke victory over the two Welshmen Rhys Davies and Stephen Dodd. He headed to his native Korea for the Ballentine's Championship that week as the World Nš 20, a jump of 6 places.

This week's other winners were Koumei Oda at the Token Homemate Cup on the Japan Tour, Kevin Chappell at the Fresh Express Classic at TPC Stonebrae on the Nationwide Tour and Andy Matthews at the Corona Mazatlan Mexican PGA Championship on the Canadian Tour.

Australia's Marcus Fraser won the Ballantine's Championship by four shots as a battling three under par final round 69 secured a wire-to-wire victory - his first in seven years. The 31 year old topped the leader-board at 12 under par after dropping just two shots in three rounds of the weather-affected 54-hole tournament at Pinx Golf Club. Northern Ireland's Gareth Maybin shared second place with Australia's Brett Rumford. The win sees Fraser jump into the World Top 100 at 98th place, a leap of 134 places in the Official World Golf Ranking.

Jason Bohn won the Zurich Classic on Sunday for his second PGA TOUR title, birdieing three of the final four holes at TPC Louisiana for a 5-under 67 and a two-stroke victory over Jeff Overton. Bohn, who completed a third-round 71 in the morning in the weather-plagued tournament, finished at 18-under 270. He had previously won the 2005 B.C. Open. Bohn improved his World Ranking by 51 positions to Nš 60.

The weeks other winners were Hiroyuki Fujita at the Tsuruya Open on the Japan Golf Tour, Ewan Porter at the South Georgia Classic Pres'd by First State Bank and Trust Company on the Nationwide Tour, Jbe' Kruger at the Africom Zimbabwe Open on the Sunshine Tour and Rob Grube at the Riviera Nayarit Classic Presented by IDN on the Canadian Tour..
