The 3rd 'John Aldridge Celebrity Charity Golf Classic' was held at Boavista Golf in Lagos on the 4th and 6th. This event was held to raise much needed money for 3 children's charities, one each in the Algarve, in Dublin and John's home town, Liverpool. By special request this year a donation was also made to benefit two young Liverpuddlian sisters, Chloe and Jamie-Lee Lathom, who lost their mother to serious illness and their dad as a result of a road accident. Main sponsor Oceanico fielded six teams and it was their representatives from the U.S.A. plus celebrity Vince Earl from Channel 4’s Brookside, that led the way after day one with a score of 92 points. This was closely followed by local team Kelly’s Heroes (T. Cash, P. Pope, S. Hyams and A. Sequeira) sponsored by Kelly's Bar in Praia da Luz, and last years winners, The Rednecks, led by ex-Liverpool defender Nigel Spackman, both teams scoring 89 Points. Although 'Kelly's Heroes' increased their day 1 score by 91 points to finish on 180, it was the U.S. visitors who maintained the edge and emerged as victors on 185 points. In 3rd place was another local team of G. Warton, B. Hawkins, S. Tanner and R. Price with 177. In the individual competition the winning celebrity was David Speedie on 73 points, but special mention should be made of the best non-celebrity, Brian Hickey who scored a superb 78 points playing-off a handicap of 1.

Four clubs, including newcomers Carvoeiro, took part in this year's 'Western Algarve Inter-Club Trophy' held at the Boavista course just west of Lagos. The Stableford scores of all 16 team members counted towards the result and the Boavista club, holders of the trophy since its inception in 2002, retained it – but only just! They scored 318 points, a single point ahead of Palmares, with Carvoeiro on 296 and Parque da Floresta 10 further back. This is a different tournament from the inter-club league which is a match-play event in which golfers from many more clubs in the Algarve participate every summer.

Shortly after the Boavista course was opened in January of this year Antonio Castelo took up the post of Director of Golf. Previous to this appointment he was the Director of Golf at Vila Sol Course at Vilamoura since 1998. For those subscribers who have not read our Newsletter Nº 5, Antonio Castelo was educated in the USA and is a keen golfer and playing off 3. His immediate comment about the Boavista Course is that 'for good players it is somewhat tricky to play'. The architect Howard Swan has used three elements to challenge the golfer, speed, contours and wind. The condition of the course is good in all respects and is maintained by Joaquim Costa who previously was working on the Pestana Courses in Carvoeiro, Gramacho and Pinta. The Golf Services Manager of the Boavista Course is Tony Walton whilst the Golf Commercial Manager is Dennis Garvey. The latter person had been previously a popular fixture at Palmares Golf Course for so many years that there is not one golfing resident in the area that does not know. It is possible that partially because of this person that the Club membership of Boavista has in a few short months already risen to 290 playing members. The Course has also been readily accepted in the golfing world with several events lined up for the next couple of months and to the end of this season. The temporary Clubhouse is with a permanent building which should start construction towards the end of this year. The reception staff consists of Charlotte (Charley), Tania and Andrea. The Buggies and Carts are looked after by Howard, Gert, Tiago and Antonio.
